Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is a Mexican holiday, celebrated on the 1st and 2nd November in connection with the Catholic holidays of All Saint's Day and All Hollow's Day. The festivities start at midnight on the 31st October. CALAVERA or Sugar skulls are often used to decorate the gravestones of the deceased.Of course, sugar skulls do not originate from Halloween celebrations at all, but rather are a traditional part of Day of the Dead celebrations in Mexico. The sugar skull represented a departed soul and was placed on the gravestone to honor the return of a particular spirit. Sugar skull art reflects the folk art style of big happy smiles, colorful icing and sparkly tin and glittery adornments.
